Truffles are a type of mushroom that grow on the roots of Hazel and Oak throughout Europe.
Different types grow throughout the continent, from the Italian White to the French Black and the northern Summer Truffle (Tuber aestivum var. uncinatum) which is offered here.
The fresh truffles are harvested from July to November and are highly prized for their distinctive flavour, commanding prices as high as €300-€400 per kilo. Truffles are used to flavour egg dishes, pasta, fish, honey, oils and even ice-cream!
Johnstown have teamed up with global truffle expert, Dr. Paul Thomas from England to offer young Hazel trees impregnated with the truffle fungus.
He has developed a sure way system to inoculate the trees without contamination to ensure success in a shorter time, with higher yield and reliability.
Truffles should be produced 3-4 years after planting.

A typical plant should produce about 1kg of truffles per year on average after 4-6 years .They can live for 50 years!
The beauty of this is that Hazelnut trees are totally hardy, native plants, suitable for any garden size as they can be pruned, and will grow in most Irish soils because they like lime.
Truffles once grew everywhere in Ireland until all the trees were cut down in the famine times and they died out. Now we have a chance to reintroduce them again.
You get to enjoy the hazelnuts and the truffles!
The hazel tree is also a great wildlife tree.
Planted out in the garden, they will produce highly prized truffles in 3-4 years.
Ample Hazelnuts will also come as a bonus if more than 1 are planted.
A fantastic gift idea for Gardeners, Chefs and Gourmets.
