Sinocalycanthus raulstonii Hartlage Wine
An excellent new introduction resulting from a cross of American native Allspice Shrub and it's relative the Chinese Wax Shrub . It is a fast growing deciduous plant, rapidly making a small to medium sized tree or large shrub with a semi open habit. It is tolerant of shade and although it will take full sun is not particularly drought tolerant. It can be used as a stand-alone feature in the garden.
The best traits of both parents are present in this cultivar. The 3 to 4 inch wide flowers open more fully than Calycanthus and thus offer a larger fuller look. The flower is held upright on the branch and is made up of two groups of tepals, an inner more tightly clustered group and a broadly outwardly spreading arrangement that gives this cultivar a fuller appearance. The color is an outstanding dark wine red.
The fragrance is described as a spicy strawberry cinnamon.
The bloom time is usually April-May and as if that wasn't enough it is a very prolific bloomer on both current and previous years growth.
Large leaves narrow and elliptic, the length can be 7 to 9 inches with a width of 4 to 5 inches. The color and texture is also very pleasing with a very glossy leaf surface or rich dark green. The autumn colour is also first rate with a fine display of solid yellow.
6 to 9 feet high and 4 to 6 feet wide .
Very hardy to below minus 20C
