Corylus Red Majestic
Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick, or Corylus avellana 'Contorta', is a shrub that has often been found mostly in connoisseur gardens where it is valued for its corkscrew-like stems which are at their best in winter and early spring before the leaves emerge to obscure the interesting form. However, for the rest of the year it offers little and simply fades into the background.
Now most gardens today usually expect more than a single-season of interest from any plant and more color interest and if a plant is to deserve a spot in your garden it should work hard to justify that precious space. And that's why a new type of Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick is so exciting. It has all of the fascinating form and winter interest of the species and some truly spectacular color. The new cultivar is called Corylus ‘Red Majestic’ and this fantastic version of Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick is a dramatic addition to the garden pallet owing to its beautiful burgundy foliage. In spring ‘Red Majestic’ opens with new, bright red foliage and, as summer approaches and temperatures rise, the red intensifies to a dark burgundy until, by late-summer, the mature foliage turns a beautiful dark green. And even as the older leaves turn green, the new growth coming on is still bright red.
Red majestic is huge overhaul of an old-time favorite.
Instead of one or two seasons of interest, this shrub will be drawing admiring glances year-round.
It grows to 6-8 feet over time with a similar spread.
It grows all across North America from Ontario to the Deep South and it is fully hardy across europe.
Beautiful twisted corkscrew branches in winter and long
yellow catkins in spring.
