Bamboo are excellent screening plants for Irish Gardens. They love moisture and are completely frost hardy as long as they have water available.
There are 2 main divisions in bamboo - Clumpers and Runners!
Clumping Bamboo do just that, staying in a neat tidy bunch with all the new stems growing up tightly around the previous canes. This is the main type that we sell as they are very well behaved in gardens.
Some people will throw their hands up in horror if you tell them you have planted bamboo, telling you that it will take over your garden. The above Clumping varieties will definitely NOT do that.
If you DO WANT a spreading bamboo, say to cover an untidy wild area then we stock one type for you - Pseudosasa japonica. This is a great tough wind hardy plant. You can grow this in a large pot, say on a deck, balcony or roof garden and it will take the wind and cold better than most bamboo. We also sell Bamboo Barrier if you have any worries at all about it spreading. This is a plastic barrier you plant in the ground around the bamboo to stop it streading.
So- worries aside, Bamboo are one of the most useful plants for providing tall evergreen screening from neighboring gardens.
Phyllostachys type bamboo have wonderful strong colourful, attractive canes either in Black, Yellow or Green. These look so well against a plain background wall or fence. They generally grow up to 4-6 metres and do NOT spread.
Fargesia bamboo are generally smaller at 2-4 metres high with more numerous smaller thinner canes. This gives a denser effect, great for blocking out noise.
All Bamboo can be grown successfully in large pots if required, but you MUST provide a regular daily water source. The best way to achieve this is with a battery operated water timer connected up to your outdoor tap and a length of hose. This will water your plants every day worry free.
