20160316 Air So Pure

Can plants improve our children’s performance in the classroom?

Air Purifying plants win again!

We know by now that certain plants can make the air in our home environment cleaner, purer and much more pleasant to inhale and exhale (if not, then click here to read all about it!) but have you ever thought about the effect this could have in our primary school classrooms?

Between 2010-2011, valuable research was carried out across four different primary schools in Holland using Air So Pure plants. Researchers spent 10 weeks measuring the climate and student performace without any air purifying plants in the classroom. They also asked questions about students health and The levels of CO2, humidity, temperature and air pollution were recorded continuously throughout this period.

Based on this research, air purifying plants were then placed in 4 out of 8 classrooms with the other 4 rooms not holding any plants. The same measurements were recorded continuously over a period of 16 weeks and the results are fascinating!

Results

In classrooms with plants and regularly enough light (>15) PAR-light, positive effects are shown:
10 – 20% CO2 reduction
Demolition of “unsavory odors” within 45 minutes to 0-level
7% less health complaints
More creativity and a more than 20% better score at tasks and test (a 35% better score at the cryptography-test).

WOW!

So, how DO they do it?

Well, the plant is a little factory.

The cells of plants are small chemical factories where chemical substances are converted into other substances, substances are broken down and substances are formed.

These controlled reactions are often carried out by enzymes
in the plant.

The various parts of the plant, leaves, stems, and roots are connected to one another by transport channels through which water and the substances dissolved in the water are transported through the plant.

Substances in the leaves can reach the roots in this way.
